Miner’s Lamp Innovation Fund in the Prevention and Early Detection Of Severe Mental Illness: 2018 Awards

The Miner's Lamp Award trophy. It is a gold trophy shaped like the cylindrical lamp traditionally used by miners
I am delighted to announce that Dr. Philip Gerretsen, Dr. Vanessa Goncalves, and Drs. Albert Wong and Fang Liu have received research grant awards from the Miner’s Lamp Innovation Fund in the Prevention and Early Detection of Severe Mental Illness for 2018. Dr. Gerretsen received funding to support his project ‘The effects of adjunctive transcranial direct current stimulation on medication adherence in first-episode schizophrenia spectrum disorder’. Dr. Goncalves received funding for her project ‘The use of mitochondrial DNA as marker of clinical subtypes of youth psychosis patients: Potential tool for precision medicine’. Drs. Wong and Liu received funding to support their project ‘The DISC1-D2 protein complex as a biomarker for early detection of schizophrenia’. The generous gift received by the University of Toronto’s Department of Psychiatry from IAMGOLD Corporation and its partners will be used over the next few years to fund studies that have the potential to impact the trajectory and outcomes of serious mental illness in adolescent and young adult patient populations, with a focus on prevention and early detection.
